49ers 2008 Schedule

From the Press Democrat

49ers' 2008 schedule
(All times are Pacific)
Sunday, Sept. 7, vs. Cardinals. 1:15 p.m. (Fox): Bryant Johnson, who was the No. 3 man in Arizona behind Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, has a chance to be the featured wideout with his new team. For the third year in a row, the 49ers open the season against the Cardinals.

Sunday, Sept. 14, at Seahawks, 1:05 p.m. (Fox): It was the win in Seattle late in the 2006 season that stands as the highlight of the Mike Nolan/Alex Smith era with the 49ers. They might need another one in '08 to get another chance in '09.

Sunday, Sept. 21, Vs. Lions, 1:05 p.m. (Fox): New offensive coordinator Mike Martz was available to the 49ers after he was fired. Let's see if he was correct when he said the 49ers' talent is much better than he inherited in Detroit.

Sunday, Sept. 28, At Saints, 10 a.m. (Fox): The old NFC West broke up after the 2001 season. Still, the way the schedule has fallen, this will be the 49ers' fourth trip to New Orleans in seven seasons. The 49ers have not beaten the Saints in four matchups since they're no longer division foes.

Sunday, Oct. 5, Vs. Patriots, 1:15 p.m. (CBS): Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli will be hammered with questions all week about how they let Joe Staley get away. And all they got out of it was a No. 7 overall draft pick.

Sunday, Oct. 12, Vs. Eagles, 1:15 p.m. (Fox): This is certainly a big season in Philadelphia, where Donovan McNabb is looking to bounce back strong from an 8-8 season. Second-year quarterback Kevin Kolb was drafted last year to eventually take over.

Sunday, Oct. 19, At Giants, 10 a.m. (CBS): Alex Smith was asked recently whether Eli Manning's quick turnaround from "bust" to Super Bowl hero serves as inspiration. "I guess you just realize what a short memory this game has and that's the exciting thing, as long as you've got the year ahead of you, that's such a great opportunity," Smith said. "If you look at Eli two years ago and what was being said and what was going on there in New York, and if you look at it now, a lot has changed in that time. That's the exciting thing about this game, you have a chance to do that and erase last year."

Sunday, Oct. 26, Vs. Seahawks, 1:15 p.m. (CBS): It'll probably be the last visit to San Francisco as a member of the Seahawks for Mike Holmgren, as Jim Mora set to take over as head coach in 2009. Holmgren-to-49ers speculation will be unbridled this week.

Sunday, Nov. 2, BYE WEEK

Monday, Nov. 10, at Cardinals, 5:30 p.m. (ESPN): What? A Monday night game? Against the Cardinals? This is the second year in a row the 49ers have played against the Cardinals on Monday night. It worked out pretty well for the 49ers last season.

Sunday, Nov. 16, Vs. Rams, 1:05 p.m. (#-Fox): No matter what turns are in store for this season, we all can agree this is the most winnable game on the schedule. Too bad for the 49ers it comes on a short week.

Sunday, Nov. 23, At Cowboys, 10 a.m. (#-Fox): Ah, another reunion with Terrell Owens. It's probably a good thing few players on this team were around when he was with the 49ers. This will be the 49ers' final trip to Texas Stadium, as the Cowboys are scheduled to move into their new stadium in 2009.

Sunday, Nov. 30, At Bills, 10 a.m. (#-Fox): They're serving Buffalo wings at the Anchor Bar, the place that invented the delicacy. Any idea what the weather's like in Buffalo this time of year?

Sunday, Dec. 7, Vs. Jets, 1:05 p.m. (#-CBS): The Jets are coming off a 4-12 season. Who will be their quarterback at this stage in the season, Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens . . . or Matt Ryan?

Sunday, Dec. 14, At Dolphins, 10 a.m. (#-Fox): Niners make their first trip to Miami since 1995. In that game, Elvis Grbac, subbing for an injured Steve Young, leads team to a 44-20 victory in a Monday night game. I can't think of any other NFL city I'd rather visit in mid-December.

Sunday, Dec. 21, At Rams, 10 a.m. (#-Fox): Cheers of "Bruuuuuuuuuce" will unquestionably greet the 49ers' receiver, as he is still one of the more popular football players in town.

Sunday, Dec. 28, Vs. Redskins, 1:15 p.m. (#-Fox): Former 49ers defensive end Andre Carter plays against his former teammates for the first time. Carter, by the way, is the only 49ers player since 2000 to record at least 10 sacks in a season. He did that in 2002 when he piled up 12.5 sacks. Will the 49ers have finally found a pass-rusher this season?

49ers to Wear Throwback Jersey to Honor Walsh

From sf49ers.com

Joe Montana to Dwight Clark. “The Catch.” Our first Super Bowl victory weeks later. The huge celebration closed down Market Street as it united the San Francisco Bay Area. Those moments 25 years ago marked the beginning of an unprecedented legacy for our 49ers: Five Super Bowl championships that continue to instill pride and loyalty throughout the Bay Area. And they all began under the leadership genius of Coach Bill Walsh. We have heard from so many of you how the vivid memories of Coach Walsh and that storybook season remain with you even today, like this posting in our Bill Walsh Memory Book: “I can remember the 1981 season like it was yesterday. I can remember watching a team destined to win it all, and the foundation laid for what would become the greatest dynasty in modern football history. Today…beyond my family and friends, the single greatest joy in my life remains the 49ers. I owe that part of my life to one person, Bill Walsh.”

The 49ers will wear the throwback uniforms, worn here at the Super Bowl team photo in 1988. Many of you have written or called asking us to have players wear the “throwback” jerseys for a game to honor Coach Walsh. We’re proud to say that we will do just that. In memory of the start Bill Walsh provided for that incredible journey, the 49ers players will wear jerseys from that era during our season-opening September 10 Monday Night Football game against Arizona. That game has been chosen as the 49ers tribute to Bill Walsh; the jerseys will make the game even more special. This is just one of the many activities we are involved with to honor this great man and 49ers legend, including activities in which our 49ers Faithful can participate: •

Contribute your memories and pictures to the Bill Walsh Memory Book on 49ers.com by emailing us at Bill.Walsh@niners.nfl.com• Visit the Walsh fan tribute area in front of our headquarters in Santa Clara • Attend the Walsh family public memorial service, August, 10 at 11:00 at Monster Park • Join us for the August 13, pre-season game vs. Denver – with a Moment of Silence in honor of Bill Walsh • Wear your 49ers colors to the September 10 game vs. Arizona – a Bill Walsh tribute • Look for the “BW” decals on the helmet and on the coaches’ shirts that the team will wear throughout the season.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate the life of Coach Bill Walsh.

Niners' Schedule Paving the Way For Success in '07

The NFL has released its "strength of schedule" rankings and results and it finds the 49ers in a very advantagess spot. While the Oakland Raiders have the toughest schedule in 2007, partly due to a 2 -14 record, the 49ers rank 30th of 32 teams in schedule toughness.

The formula takes previous record and combines it with the previous combined record of all upcoming opponents to determine how difficult each team's schedules are. Based on how good each team is to begin with, it will help predict what that team can expect for challenges throughout its schedule.

The 49ers, coming off an average 7 - 9 season, and playing in one of the weaker divisions in the NFL, face teams with a combined winning percentage of .469 (or 46.9%). By comparison, the Raiders face teams with a winning percentage of .539 (or 53.9%).

While this doesn't necessarily mean that you can expect San Francisco to be in Arizona in February for the Super Bowl, it does mean that they will enter more games as the favorite this year, than they have in the past few years.

49ers Announce 2007 Schedule

The San Francisco 49ers will open its 2007 NFL regular season against an NFC West foe when they play the Arizona Cardinals in a nationally-televised home game on Monday Night Football on September 10.

The slate includes four nationally-televised games against the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The games against Arizona and Seattle will be Monday Night Football games on ESPN. There is potential for the 49ers to play more nationally-televised games due to the NFL's flexible schedule.

In addition to the 49ers usual NFC West opponents, Arizona, St. Louis and Seattle, San Francisco will play games against the AFC North and NFC South based on the NFL’s rotating schedule. Four of the 49ers 2007 season opponents were playoff contenders in 2006.

The schedule also consists of two at-large games that are determined based on records from the previous season. By virtue of where the 49ers finished in the NFC West last season, they will play on the road against the NFC East New York Giants and at home against the NFC North Minnesota Vikings. For the first time since 2003, the Club will face the AFC North Division with games against Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and the 2006 Division Champion Baltimore Ravens. The October 7 matchup against Baltimore marks the first time 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan will face the Ravens since he served as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2004. The 49ers play three home games before the BYE weekend on October 14 and end the season with three of four December games played at home, two on national television.

49ers Open Season on MNF against Cards

On Monday at the NFL Annual Meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the NFL's 2007 Kickoff Weekend national television schedule – including a Monday night doubleheader that will feature the San Francisco 49ers – and its Thanksgiving Day national TV tripleheader. In a tradition that began in 2004, the Super Bowl champion annually hosts the NFL Thursday night season kickoff the following year. This September 6 at 8:30 PM ET on NBC, the Super Bowl XLI champion Colts will welcome the New Orleans Saints to Indianapolis. The game will have an “All-Star” flavor, featuring the starting quarterbacks from the 2007 Pro Bowl – Indianapolis’ PEYTON MANNING and the Saints’ DREW BREES. On Sunday, September 9, the FOX national doubleheader game at 4:15 PM ET will send the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears to visit the AFC West champion San Diego Chargers, led by reigning NFL MVP LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON and new head coach NORV TURNER. San Diego (14-2) and Chicago (13-3) led their respective conferences in regular-season wins in ’06.

The Sunday night primetime game (8:15 PM ET) on NBC will feature the NFC Wild Card Playoff teams of last season, as the New York Giants visit the Dallas Cowboys, led by new head coach WADE PHILLIPS. Monday night, September 10, ESPN will host a Monday Night Football doubleheader featuring two critical division matchups. The first game (7:00 PM ET) will send the AFC North titlist Baltimore Ravens to Cincinnati to battle the Bengals. The MNF nightcap (10:15 PM ET) will be an NFC West matchup, as the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. The game will showcase talented young quarterbacks – Arizona’s MATT LEINART ,left,(No. 10 overall selection in last year’s draft) and the 49ers’ ALEX SMITH ,above,(No. 1 overall pick in ’05).

"There is always excitement on opening day, but when it is at home on Monday Night Football in front of a national-televised audience it is magnified even more," said head coach Mike Nolan. "Every team knows that the key to winning begins in your division. The opportunity to open against NFC-West rival Arizona speaks for itself."On Sunday, September 9, CBS, which has U.S. Open tennis in the late afternoon slot, will carry a lineup of early regional NFL games. CBS will televise the NFL national doubleheader late game in Week 2.

Continuing an innovation introduced last season, the NFL will serve up three nationally-televised games on Thanksgiving Day, including the first of NFL Network’s late-season primetime offerings of 2007. The early game (FOX, 12:30 PM ET) will be an NFC North meeting of the Green Bay Packers at the Detroit Lions. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the second game (CBS, 4:15 PM ET) will be a family affair when the New York Jets travel to the Dallas Cowboys. It will be a matchup of running back brothers – 28-year-old THOMAS JONES, recently acquired by the Jets in a trade, against his sibling, 25-year-old JULIUS of the Cowboys. This will be the second meeting of their professional careers – Julius (150 yards, two touchdowns) got the better of Thomas’ Bears on Thanksgiving Day in 2004 in a 21-7 Cowboys’ victory.

The Thanksgiving tripleheader continues at 8:15 PM ET on NFL Network when the Colts visit the Atlanta Falcons, led by new head coach BOBBY PETRINO. The rest of the 2007 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced in April.
