On our list of the 10 greatest 49er draft day selections, the number six player is probably the least recognizable, yet played a pivotal role in the road to the 49ers fifth world championship.
Previously: Number 10 - Y.A. Tittle, Number 9 - Ronnie Lott, Number 8 - Terrell Owens,
Number 7 - Dave Wilcox
Number 6:
1991 - Round - 5 - CB/SS - Merton Hanks, Iowa
While other players may have been more visible or garnered more star power during the 90's, Merton Hanks was an important role player and skilled comodity coming out of college in 1991. However, at the NFL scouting combine, his 40-yard dashes were extremely slow, and he was not drafted until the fifth round by the 49ers. Although not the fastest in the defensive secondary, Hanks was a natural at comprehending football knowledge. He became well-known for his interceptions and returns, as well as for what became known as the "Funky Chicken" dance.
Hanks helped backstop the 49ers defensive secondary from the cornerback position, and later as a safety, helping to maintain the high level of play following the departure of players such as defensive leader Ronnie Lott. He played an important role during the 1994 season as an able cover man and last line of defense for the 49ers last Super Bowl championship team. His play against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game that year, helped pave the way for a 49ers romp over San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX. A four time Pro Bowler, Hanks was a salary cap casualty in 1999 and finished his career with the Seattle Seahawks.
