As a follow-up to our Thursday post "Alex Smith, the next Peyton Manning or Tim Couch?", here is an interesting update on the experts, you the fans, and how they expect the 23 year old Smith to respond to his third season and increased weapons on offense.
In an NFL.com poll that has had approx. 140,000 votes through Sunday, Alex Smith was a the head of the class in the category of "Which of these third year players is most ready for a breakout season?". Alex Smith leads the way with 37% of the vote over noteables such as Cedric Benson (HB, Chicago), Ronnie Brown (HB, Miami), Jason Campbell (QB, Washington), Matt Jones (WR, Jacksonville), Mark Clayton (WR, Baltimore), and Troy Williamson (WR, Minnesota)
Clearly, this does not insure success on Smith's part by any means, but it does give an indication of how the overall consensus is that Alex Smith is gaining the maturity, confidence, and most importantly the tools around him to make great strides ahead again this year.
