Playing from a standing start, refining his footwork and regularly dropping into pass coverage are among the adjustments defensive end-turned-linebacker Jay Moore is dealing with as he prepares for his rookie season with the 49ers.
A fourth-round draft pick out of Nebraska, Moore caught the eye of 49ers coaches at the Senior Bowl, with three sacks against the South team they were coaching. He has been taking repetitions primarily behind outside linebacker Manny Lawson, who has typically played on the strong side over the tight end in the 49ers' 3-4 scheme. Moore played defensive end in a 4-3 set last season at Nebraska and led the team with 17 tackles for losses, including six sacks.

Jay Moore Adapts to Linebacker Position
The 6-foot-4 Moore played at 278 pounds last season. He said he's down to 272, and the 49ers probably will ask him to drop a few more pounds to heighten his speed and maneuverability in the open field. Moore is fairly lean but said he'll have no problem getting to whatever weight the 49ers staff determines is optimal for him.
