The NFL has released its "strength of schedule" rankings and results and it finds the 49ers in a very advantagess spot. While the Oakland Raiders have the toughest schedule in 2007, partly due to a 2 -14 record, the 49ers rank 30th of 32 teams in schedule toughness.
The formula takes previous record and combines it with the previous combined record of all upcoming opponents to determine how difficult each team's schedules are. Based on how good each team is to begin with, it will help predict what that team can expect for challenges throughout its schedule.
The 49ers, coming off an average 7 - 9 season, and playing in one of the weaker divisions in the NFL, face teams with a combined winning percentage of .469 (or 46.9%). By comparison, the Raiders face teams with a winning percentage of .539 (or 53.9%).
While this doesn't necessarily mean that you can expect San Francisco to be in Arizona in February for the Super Bowl, it does mean that they will enter more games as the favorite this year, than they have in the past few years.
