In the backfield, it all comes down to one guy, and if he's good, they'll be good, and if he's not.....well, you get the idea.

If Frank Gore ,(right) puts another monster rushing total for the year up again, the 49ers will make the playoffs. End of discussion. Gore's effectiveness makes the entire team better. On offense, he allows ball-control and takes pressure off of Alex Smith's development and that of his young receiving corps. On defense, offensive ball control keeps the defense rested and on the sideline. Plain and simple. With nearly 2,200 yards of total offense in '06, Gore is the key to all of their plans. That is, provided he stays healthy and continues to display his fabulous work ethic. From there, the depth chart at HB goes down hill pretty quick.

Rating The Squads - The Running Backs
Maurice Hicks, (left) is a decent pass-catcher out of the backfield and an able return man, and converted Penn St. QB Michael Robinson has the potential to be a good change of pace guy, but that is about it. 6th round pick Thomas Clayton has Larry Johnson size and Willie Parker ability, but won't make the team unless he shakes off college off-field problems that come with him. FB Moran Norris seems like a solid blocker who can chip in with timely short yardage runs or catches.
