With the approaching NFL-mandatory cut-down to 53 players on Saturday, September 1, the San Francisco 49ers waived seven players on Friday.
The 49ers waived one first-year player and six rookies.
Waived on Friday were first-year CB Markus Curry and rookies DE Zack Anderson, OL Sean Estrada, QB Luke Getsy, S Jake Patten, DE Darius Sanders and RB Arkee Whitlock. The 49ers will finalize their roster cuts on Saturday and then establish its 8-man practice squad by Sunday.
The injuries suffered in the game by Jay Moore (high ankle sprain) and Joe Cohen (knee) will also factor and influence those cuts. Nolan did not have an affirmative on the time frame for recovery for either play as of his afternoon press conference.
“I would say the backups are sometimes some of the toughest decisions to make because is that backup developmental or is that backup an established guy? Is that backup going to get on the 45 active roster each week or is he going to just be sitting there in the developmental sense, but in order to keep him, you’ve got to have him on the 53? So, the difficult decisions are really along the lines of backups," said Nolan. "Then with the injuries, when we get some clarification as to just how extensive some of the injuries are, then that will adjust our thoughts as well because whether you thought about a guy being on the 53 and maybe he goes on IR or maybe you try to get him on the practice squad and things like that, that all really lies within your backups. Your starters are pretty set. There is not a lot of decisions to make about those guys unless they got injured and effect a backup role. In our case, it doesn’t look like that is the case for us."
The team came in on Friday for some running with the 49ers strength coaches and then met with head coach Mike Nolan before departed for the weekend. They will resume practice on Monday.
Nolan was not certain of guard David Baas' status after suffering a stinger in Saturday night's game, but he does expect guard/tackle Adam Snyder to be probable for next week.
