Smith wants do-over on final throw

Of the 45 throws Alex Smith made yesterday, the one he wants back is the last. Smith said today that the Seahawks began in a zone defense on the 49ers' final offensive drive. But on third and three, Seattle suddenly switched to man-to-man coverage, surprising the 49ers. Instead of rushing three defenders, the Seahawks brought five. Smith tried for a long pass down the sideline to Josh Morgan, but it fell incomplete and nearly was intercepted. The 49ers punted with enough time for the Seahawks to drive for the game-winning field goal. "That's the one ball I'd really like to have over again," Smith said.

Asked whether he was still on board with offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, Singletary said "Absolutely. Absolutely. "Anything I've asked him to do he's more than willing to do," Singletary said. "I think Alex has adjusted to him well. He and Alex are on the same page. Mike Johnson - all the guys are on the same page."

Harbaugh Watches Iowa QB

Jim Harbaugh was one of the NFL evaluators on hand today to watch Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi work out on the school's campus, according to the National Football Post. Stanzi, who played in the Hawkeyes' pro-style offense the last three years, has had two campus workouts. The first on March 21 coincided with the owners' meeting in New Orleans, which head coaches were required to attend. So the school set up a second session today. Stanzi threw for 3,004 yards last season, and he may be the most polished of all of the quarterbacks coming out in the draft. He's got a quick release and makes good decisions having thrown 25 touchdowns against six interceptions last season. However, he does not have the athleticism - something Harbaugh covets - or the arm strength of other prospects. It should be noted that Harbaugh and Stanzi are represented by the same agent, Jack Bechta. (In fact, Harbaugh had two agents when he was hired by the 49ers in January, Bechta and David Dunn, who also represents Jake Locker.

Willis Named Rookie of the Week

Voters on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless service have made their choice. Linebacker Patrick Willis of the San Francisco 49ers is the winner of the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week competition for games played Sept. 6-10.

Willis recorded 11 tackles and forced a fumble in his first regular-season game, helping the 49ers to a 20-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Willis led the 49ers in total tackles and joined Oakland's Kirk Morrison and Tampa Bay's Barrett Ruud as league leaders in Week 1 with nine solo tackles. More than 82,500 fans voted this week on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless service. Willis was selected from among five finalists. The other finalists were wide receiver John Broussard of the Jacksonville Jaguars, wide receiver Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions, running back Marshawn Lynch of the Buffalo Bills, and running back Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota
