Facing his third new play-calling scheme in as many years, Alex Smith must make further progress on the strides forward that he took in '06. After becoming the first 49er QB ever to take every snap in a season, Smith showed he has the toughness to shake off hits and bounce back up. He looked better last year overall, but especially in avaiding the rush and getting out of the pocket and making plays on the run. Smith has to cut down on his turnovers, particularily fumbles, and make better decisions on his check downs and reads to find the open man.

Jim Hostler, last year's QB Coach is now the offensive coordinator, and will continue what departed OC Norv Turner (San Diego) started. Along with back-up/mentor/coach Trent Dilfer, Smith will continue to improve and his numbers will show that this year.
