Terms of the deal for first round draft pick, Joe Staley of Central Michigan, were announced on Friday. Staley is now signed to a 5 year, $10 million contract, according to Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Staley (right), is the fourth of the 49ers' nine draft choices to sign, and only the second first-round pick to be signed so far by any NFL team. Incentives could push the value of Staley's contract to near $11 million, according to his agent, Rick Smith. Staley a 6-foot-5, 310-pounder, will compete with Kwame Harris for the right-tackle job when the 49ers open training camp July 29. Staley got a good jump on the competition in June, when he played the position throughout three weeks of organized team activity practices as Harris sat out with back spasms. According to the NFL Draft Scout Web site, Staley staged one of the most impressive offensive-lineman workouts at the scouting combine in February. The former pass-catching tight end ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.8 seconds) of any lineman. However, those speedy legs could be his downfall in the NFL, according to one former NFL scout.
Team spokesman Aaron Salkin said negotiations are ongoing for the five draft picks who remain unsigned, including first-round linebacker Patrick Willis, who was picked 11th overall. The 49ers should have a better idea about the numbers required for Willis after Houston defensive tackle Amobi Okoye (No. 10) and former Cal running back Marshawn Lynch (No. 12, by Buffalo) are signed. Both of those teams will open camp before the 49ers. Salkin also said that the team expects to report at full health, including players who missed organized team activities, including Harris, cornerback Shawntae Spencer, and wide receivers Ashley Lelie and Darrell Jackson.
Also on Tuesday, the team signed cornerback Markus Curry and tight end Zach Hilton.
