A Suggestion For Smith

Kevin Lynch, San Francisco Chronicle

Assessing the once-great team Hall-of-Famer Steve Young quarterbacked, Young said the current 49ers have little connection to their glorious past. Young seemed almost hurt that the 49ers looked so bad in their 24-0 loss to Seattle last night. At one point he needed a hug from Stuart Scott. So how about bringing Young in to watch film with Alex Smith, whose confidence is clearly shattered? At this point Smith might need someone from outside the organization to break things down for him. Smith's mechanics seem to be failing him and he no longer seems to trust his eyes downfield. He needs a mentor and Young has the passion for the task, lives in the area, and would probably be willing to do it.

Smith also has a connection to Joe Montana, who lives in Contra Costa now. Those two quarterbacks might be able to get Smith back to playing for the fun of it. From his body language, Smith appears beaten down. If anyone can build him back up it's a Hall-of-Famer who can provide a fresh perspective. By the way, in one post last night, I wrote the last time the 49ers only had six first downs was Dec. 10, 1960 against Green Bay. Actually, the 49ers had six first downs five weeks ago in a home loss to Baltimore.
