Part two of our look at the squads and their promise or problems.
Last time: The Special Teams :B
Up Next: The Defensive Backs
Grade: B-
Widely considered to be the top free agent available this offseason, Nate Clements, (left) is a big, sturdy corner with great playmaking ability and closing speed who never missed a game in 6 seasons in Buffalo. At 27, he is entering his prime. On the other side is 2006 Pro-Bowler Walt Harris who had one of the best seasons ever by a 49er defensive back last year pulling in 8 interceptions. Following them is third year playmaker Shawntae Spencer, who is looking like a steal as a fourth round pick in 2004. The dark horse will be fifth round pick Tarell Brown and whether he shows the talent that should have made him a first or early second round pick, or the character issues that caused him to slip to the second day of the draft.
Mark Roman, a journeyman veteran, with the smarts and character needed, seems the likely starter at Free Safety with free agent addition Michael Lewis (right, Philadelphia) as the starter at Strong Safety. Lewis is a strong support for stuffing the run and a hard hitter, but vulnerable to the deep ball. Special teamer Keith Lewis (no relation) and fourth round pick Dashon Goldson will provide some depth.
