In a ten part series, we will evaluate the 49ers different offensive, defensive and specialty squads based on new players, coaching, and strategy to see what parts will be a strength, and which areas need some help.
First Up: The Special Teams Unit
Grade: B
Place kicker Joe Nedney (right) was solid last season but not as good as the year before when he was a team co-MVP. The 49ers matched an offer sheet to retain Punter Andy Lee who improved last year, his third as a pro. Maurice Hicks, back-up HB, is solid yet not spectacular as a kick-off returner, while rookie Brandon Williams, was drafted specifically as a punt return specialist and was a bust. Back-up Safety Keith Lewis is an exceptional gunner and newcomer Colby Bockwoldt, from the Titans, will anchor the coverage units.
